When a computer boots up, the MSI motherboard BIOS is controlling the boot process -- it checks power, CPU, RAM and devices attached to the system, which is called the POST (or Power On Self Test) phase.
After this, the BIOS hands over the computer to your operating system.
Through experience, we have found that most "recent" Award/Phoenix and AMI BIOS's can generally support USB boot.

Windows tries to boot into recovery but BSODs again and again. Rebooted with USB key (I turned off secure boot, etc. I tried this both allowing BIOS to run untouched and by going into BIOS options (pressing ESC @ boot up) - no options anywhere to read/update BIOS.
According to an HP Support doc, I tried updating the BIOS from w/in "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI".
